Honor the memory of longtime SIU Director of Bands, Mike Hanes by supporting the Mike Hanes Memorial Naming Fund, which will allow the Marching Salukis to continue to be the Pride of Southern Illinois.
Funds raised will support the purchase of a much needed new observation tower and renovation and maintenance of the storage sheds.
Mike was a beloved director of the Marching Salukis, a title he held for 31 years from 1965 until 1996. He retired from the University as director of bands in 2005 but continued to be involved in the SIU School of Music as well as leading the Marching Saluki alumni band for a performance at Homecoming football games. Mike was also the band director at McLeod Summer Playhouse for many years and was involved in other musical endeavors. Many people credit Mike for giving the Marching Salukis its signature sound and look. Mike affected the lives of thousands of SIU students throughout his time at SIU and was known for his kindness and genuine enthusiasm for making music.
