The College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) proudly created a new award in 2021 – The Elaine M. Vitello Ph.D. Leadership Award. Dr. Vitello served as the Dean of the College of Applied Sciences and the Arts from 1990 – 2002, and she was the first female Dean in the history of Southern Illinois University. Just as Dr. Vitello broke a glass ceiling at SIU, we want to prepare the next generation of SIU students for similar leadership accomplishments. Thus, the Elaine M. Vitello Ph.D. Leadership Award is designed to acknowledge women with exceptional leadership potential in CHHS. Awardees will be selected based on their commitment and dedication to leadership as indicated by service to the school, college, university and/or community, as well as career goals.
The recipient of this award will receive a $500 scholarship, and up to $2000 to attend a national women’s leadership conference. The College also sets up a faculty mentor for the recipient of this award. The inaugural recipient was Arianna Goss, a student in Health Care Management and her faculty mentor was Dr. Sandy Collins. This year’s recipient is Jacqueline Crain, a student in Sports Administration. Her mentors are Dr. Julie Partridge and Dr. Molly Hudgins. The College of Health and Human Sciences is hoping to endow this award so we may be able to continue Dr. Vitello’s legacy and enhance opportunities for our female students to grow in leadership positions.
