Nathan Black Memorial Bench

Nathan Black, a native of Quincy, Illinois, came to SIU Carbondale after serving in the United States Air Force for ten years within the computer systems arena.  He began as a student in the Fall Semester of 1996 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems Technologies in 2001.  In May of 1997, he was hired as an Extra Help Microcomputer Support Specialist III for the purpose of providing computer support in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts Dean’s Office.  After five months, he transitioned into a full-time Civil Service role as a LAN Specialist I and was later upgraded to a LAN Administrator, that contributed to a total of approximately 26 years of service at SIU Carbondale.

Those that worked with Nathan would say he provided excellent computer support to everyone. Whether it be a simple issue with a keyboard or a complex computer solution, Nathan did his job timely and with a smile.  He never made you feel like an inconvenience and would often say each call was “job security” for him.

On the personal side, many remember conversations with Nathan about his family and their travels together, discussions regarding his cats, him riding his bike to work from Murphysboro, and the famous cheesecakes he would bake.  His cheesecakes were always a favorite at various work-related events and many would get dessert first to make sure they got a piece to enjoy.

Nathan was a friend to all, provided excellent customer service, always went above and beyond, and will be truly missed.   He did his job like no other so we could do our job like no other…..

Our goal is to raise $5000 to honor Nathan with a bench to be located near the Applied Sciences and Arts Building and Campus Lake.  Considering he spent his entire career at SIU Carbondale in the same area of campus, this will allow his family and friends to come sit with him at the place he knew best.

With this being said, please consider donating to this purpose so all have the opportunity to learn more about Nathan as they stroll around campus lake.  All additional dollars raised above the $5000 goal will go toward the planting of a tree near the bench.
