Judge Ramón Escapa Memorial Fund

Honor the memory of Judge Ramón Escapa by contributing to the Judge Escapa Memorial Fund.  Funds raised will be used to place a new bench named after Ramón at the entrance of Lesar Hall.  Any remaining funds will go to the Veteran's Clinic in honor of Ramón's two tours of duty in the Reserves.  The Veterans’ Legal Assistance Program Clinic (“VLAP”) provides free legal assistance to Veterans in southern Illinois who cannot afford or do not have access to legal representation in the appeals of claims for compensation for service-connected disabilities, pension benefits, survivor benefits, and education benefits.

Ramón Manuel Escapa, 42, of Rushville, IL passed away at 9:56 a.m. Sunday, June 19, 2022 in Frederick Township, Schuyler Co., IL. He was born on December 24, 1979 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico a son of Angel Luis Escapa Matos & Maria Aponte.

He married Michelle Ann Thomas, his wife of almost twenty years, on February 6, 2003 at the Schuyler County Courthouse. She survives along with his mother, paternal grandmother, Isabel Matos Escapa, (4) children, twin boys, Isaac Manuel Escapa attending the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, Isaiah Ramón Escapa, attending the University of Chicago, a daughter, Isabel Marie Escapa who will be attending Spoon River College, Ian Luis Escapa, who will be entering his freshman year of high school, (1) brother, Luis Escapa, (2) half sisters, Angely Escapa, Valery Pratt, (2) half brothers, Christian Escapa, Jacob Clayton, (1) step brother, Kyle Clayton, (1) special aunt, Luisabel Escapa, numerous other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews & cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, paternal grandfather, Luis Escapa Negron, maternal grandmother, Cecilia Oritz Braceti, paternal grandfather, Ramón Aponte Betancourt.

He was a 1998 graduate of Rushville High School. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 12 years currently serving as a JAG Officer. Ramon was a Schuyler County Sheriff’s Deputy and a Beardstown Police Officer. He taught English as a second language in Beardstown, IL before joining the Illinois Bar in 2009. Before his election as Schuyler Co. States Attorney he was a partner in the law firm of Lucie, Scalf, Escapa & Graham in Macomb, IL.

He was currently a judge in the Eighth Judicial Circuit. Ramón was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Rushville. He was also a member of Ride Illinois, Schuyler County 22 Club, Knights of Columbus, Rushville Masonic Lodge #9, Illinois Bar Association and Illinois Latino’s Judges Association.
