There may be no better way to honor the legacy of a renowned leader and contribute to our Health Education profession’s future than to support the next generation. You may know, in 2008, the Elena M. Sliepcevich Centre for Health Education Studies (EMS CHES) was founded at Southern Illinois University Carbondale as a tribute to “Dr S” and a means of capturing important Health Education history.
In Phase One, the Centre’s Collections at SIU’s Morris Library/Special Collections Research Center included Dr. Sliepcevich’s life work featuring the landmark School Health Education Study, and her personal memorabilia. Additionally, five decades of materials related to other Health Education Key Leaders are archived resources available for scholars, students, and other professionals as “Dr S” did throughout her career.

Phase Two in 2009, Graduate and Undergraduate students receiving Elena M Sliepcevich Professional Development Awards, became the primary focus for extending her legacy. A collaboration with the national Health Science honorary, Eta Sigma Gamma, was begun in 2018 to provide oversight, expand access, and Centre funding for these awards. The Elena M. Sliepcevich Centre for Health Education Endowment Fund through the SIU Foundation (SIUF) will provide on-going financial support for Graduate and Undergraduate Elena M Sliepcevich Professional Development Awards at Eta Sigma Gamma.
As one who knew of, was a colleague, student, and/or friend of “Dr S,” we invite you to participate in our efforts to expand the SIUF fund for ESG and student awards it supports. Your donation(s) will (1) grow the endowment and (2) expand these annual student awards and contribute to the future of Health Education. Our goal is to raise $50,000.
